I noti\u00adced a small boy, deli\u00adca\u00adte of bone and fea\u00adture, rag\u00adged but clean, hung\u00adri\u00adly app\u00adri\u00adsing a bas\u00adket of fresh\u00adly picked green&nbsp;peas.&nbsp;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I paid for my pota\u00adtoes but was also drawn to the dis\u00adplay of fresh green peas. I am a pusho\u00adver for crea\u00admed peas and new pota\u00adtoes. Pon\u00adde\u00adring the peas, I couldn't help over\u00adhea\u00adring the con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon  bet\u00adween Mr. Mil\u00adler (the store owner) and the rag\u00adged boy next to&nbsp;me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Hel\u00adlo Bar\u00adry, how are you today?'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>H'lo, Mr. Mil\u00adler. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admi\u00adrin'  them peas. They sure look&nbsp;good.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>They are good, Bar\u00adry. How's your&nbsp;Ma?'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Fine. Git\u00adtin' stron\u00adger alla'&nbsp;time.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Good. Anything I can help you&nbsp;with?'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>No, Sir. Jus' admi\u00adrin' them&nbsp;peas.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Would you like to take some home?' asked Mr. Miller.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>No, Sir. Got nut\u00adhin' to pay for 'em&nbsp;with.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Well, what have you to trade me for some of tho\u00adse&nbsp;peas?'<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>All I got's my pri\u00adze marb\u00adle&nbsp;here.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Is that right? Let me see it' said Miller.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Here 'tis. She's a dandy.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the  store owner asked.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Not zack\u00adley but almost..'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marb\u00adle'. Mr. Mil\u00adler told the&nbsp;boy.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Mil\u00adler, who had been stan\u00adding near\u00adby, came  over to help me. With a smi\u00adle she said, 'The\u00adre are two other boys like him in our com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, all three are in very poor cir\u00adcum\u00adstances. Jim just loves to  bar\u00adgain with them for peas, app\u00adles, toma\u00adtoes, or wha\u00adte\u00adver. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he deci\u00addes he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of pro\u00addu\u00adce for a green marb\u00adle or an oran\u00adge one, when they come on their next trip to the store.'&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I left the store smi\u00adling to mys\u00adelf, impres\u00adsed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colo\u00adra\u00addo, but I never for\u00adgot the sto\u00adry of this man, the boys, and their bar\u00adte\u00adring for marbles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Seve\u00adral years went by, each more rapid than the pre\u00advious one. Just recent\u00adly I had occa\u00adsi\u00adon to visit some old fri\u00adends in that Ida\u00adho com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty and while I was the\u00adre lear\u00adned that Mr. Mil\u00adler had&nbsp;died.<\/p>\n<p>They were having his visi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon that evening and kno\u00adwing my fri\u00adends wan\u00adted to go, I agreed to  accom\u00adpa\u00adny them. Upon arri\u00adval at the mor\u00adtua\u00adry we fell into line to meet the rela\u00adti\u00adves of the decea\u00adsed and to offer wha\u00adte\u00adver words of com\u00adfort we could.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uni\u00adform and the other two wore nice hair\u00adcuts, dark suits and white shirts ... all very  pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal loo\u00adking. They approa\u00adched Mrs. Mil\u00adler, stan\u00adding com\u00adpo\u00adsed and smi\u00adling by her husband's cas\u00adket. Each of the young men hug\u00adged her, kissed her on the cheek, spo\u00adke brief\u00adly with her and moved on to the casket.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her mis\u00adty light blue eyes fol\u00adlo\u00adwed them as, one by one, each  young man stop\u00adped brief\u00adly and pla\u00adced his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the cas\u00adket. Each left the mor\u00adtua\u00adry awk\u00adward\u00adly, wiping his&nbsp;eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Our turn came to meet Mrs. Mil\u00adler. I told her who I was and remin\u00added her of the sto\u00adry from tho\u00adse many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's  bar\u00adte\u00adring for marbles. With her eyes gli\u00adstening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>Tho\u00adse three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they app\u00adre\u00adcia\u00adted the things Jim 'traded' them. Now, at last, when Jim could not chan\u00adge his mind about color or size ... they came to pay their&nbsp;debt.'<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">'<\/span>We've never had a gre\u00adat deal  of the wealth of this world,' she con\u00adfi\u00added, 'but right now, Jim would con\u00adsider hims\u00adelf the richest man in Idaho'<\/p>\n<p>With loving gent\u00adle\u00adness she lifted the lifel\u00adess fin\u00adgers of her decea\u00adsed hus\u00adband. Rest\u00ading under\u00adneath were three exqui\u00adsi\u00adte\u00adly shi\u00adned red marbles.<br>\n<br>&nbsp;<br>\nThe Moral&nbsp;:<br>\nWe will not be remem\u00adbe\u00adred  by our words, but <a href=\"http:\/\/clv.de\/_old\/andachten\/v04517.htm\" target=\"_blank\">by our kind deeds<\/a>. Life is not mea\u00adsu\u00adred  by the breaths  we take, but by the moments that take our breath&nbsp;..&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today I wish all of you rea\u00adders a day of <i>ordi\u00adna\u00adry<\/i> miracles:<br>\n..
