He had dri\u00adven his Che\u00advy Impa\u00adla out into the desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He atta\u00adched the JATO<\/span> unit to the car, jum\u00adped in, got up some speed and fired off the JATO<\/span>! The facts as best as could be deter\u00admi\u00adned are that the ope\u00adra\u00adtor of the 1967 Impa\u00adla hit the JATO<\/span> igni\u00adti\u00adon at a distance of appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly 3..0 miles from the crash site. This was estab\u00adlished by the scor\u00adched and mel\u00adted asphalt at that location.
\nThe JATO<\/span>, if ope\u00adra\u00adting pro\u00adper\u00adly, would have rea\u00adched maxi\u00admum thrust within 5 seconds, caus\u00ading the Che\u00advy to reach speeds well in excess of 350 mph and con\u00adti\u00adnuing at full power for an addi\u00adtio\u00adnal 20-25 seconds.
\nThe dri\u00adver, and soon to be pilot, would have expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced G-forces usual\u00adly reser\u00adved for dog fight\u00ading F-14 jocks under full afterbur\u00adners, caus\u00ading him to beco\u00adme irrele\u00advant for the rema\u00adin\u00adder of the event.
